Question: Among term and late preterm infants, can a visual analogue scale predict either the bilirubin level or risk of developing concerning hyperbilirubinemia?

Investigators from the University of Pennsylvania conducted a prospective cohort study to assess the correlation of visual assessment of jaundice and measured bilirubin concentration, and its accuracy in predicting subsequent development of concerning hyperbilirubinemia. Nurses used a five-point scale to grade the maximum cephalocaudad extent of jaundice prior to discharge of healthy late preterm (≥35 weeks) and term infants cared for and discharged from the Well Newborn Nursery.
