Question: Among children with encephalitis, what is the long-term outcome and what are the prognostic factors?

Researchers at the Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital and Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, conducted a study to determine the long-term outcome of childhood encephalitis and to identify clinical predictors of prognosis. For the study, medical records of children who were treated for acute encephalitis from 2000 to 2004 were reviewed. Outcomes were determined by structured telephone interview with families to identify persistent symptoms and assess the child’s ability to participate in everyday activities. In addition, study patients who had the most severe symptoms at time of discharge underwent EEG and tests of reaction time and working memory.
