Investigators from multiple institutions in California, Boston, and Haiti used DNA sequencing technology in an attempt to determine the origin of the Vibrio strain responsible for the recent deadly cholera epidemic in Haiti. In October 2010, nine months after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, an epidemic of cholera was confirmed. By November 19, 2010, the outbreak had reached every part of the country, and by December 17 a total of 121,518 cases of cholera, resulting in 63,711 hospitalizations and 2,591 deaths, had been reported.1 A cholera epidemic had not been seen on the island for over 100 years.
