To determine whether acupuncture is as effective as eye patching in treating anisometropic amblyopia, investigators from Hong Kong conducted a randomized controlled trial. Children aged 7 to 12 years were eligible for the study if they had worn glasses for at least 16 weeks prior to randomization and had moderate amblyopia with vision in the amblyopic eye between 20/40 and 20/125. Participants were randomized to either two hours of continuous daily patching, including at least one hour of near vision activities under parental supervision, or five acupuncture treatment sessions per week.
