Investigators at the University of Michigan assessed the usefulness of hemoglobin A1C (A1C) for diagnosis of diabetes in asymptomatic adolescents. They reviewed fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and A1C values that had been collected in participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) between 1999 and 2004, and again in 2005 to 2006. Data on 2-hour plasma glucose (PG) levels after a glucose load and A1C data from NHANES participants from 2005 to 2006 were also compared.
