A consortium of pediatricians in the Netherlands and Belgium conducted a randomized controlled trial examining whether low dose antibiotic prophylaxis reduces the risk of urinary tract infections (UTI) in children with spina bifida performing clean intermittent catheterization (CIC). Children meeting these criteria who were receiving antibiotic prophylaxis were randomized to continue or discontinue this prophylaxis, and followed for 18 months.
