Utilizing data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS), researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined hospitalization rates and the prevalence of stroke risk factors among children and young adults hospitalized for acute stroke between 1995 and 2008. Data including gender, age, and presence of multiple stroke risk factors were abstracted from the NIS on patients, 5 to 44 years old, with discharge diagnoses of acute ischemic (AI) stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage stroke (SAH), or intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).
