Investigators from the United Kingdom and Italy conducted a randomized controlled trial to determine if prenatal screening for and treatment of maternal hypothyroidism improves childhood cognitive function. Pregnant women at a gestation of 15 weeks 6 days or less provided blood samples for measurement of thyrotropin and free thyroxin (T4).
