Investigators at San Francisco General Hospital and the University of Chicago surveyed the residents at an academic tertiary care internal medicine residency program regarding the impact of increased supervision on residency training after the establishment of an overnight in-hospital attending program. The implementation of an in-hospital attending at this program occurred in 2010 and included expectations that the attending evaluate newly admitted ICU patients within 2 hours of admission and step-down admissions within 6 hours, provide direct or indirect supervision of care of any patients undergoing a major clinical change, and conduct half-hour didactic sessions with residents.
