Investigators from Washington University, St. Louis and Biological Mimetics, Inc., Frederick, MD conducted a study to better understand the viral etiologies of fever without an apparent source (FWS) in young children. Children aged 2 to 36 months who presented to the emergency department (ED) at St. Louis Children’s Hospital with a temperature of ≥38°C without an apparent source and who had blood obtained for clinical management were enrolled. Children with symptoms suggestive of a viral respiratory infection or who had a positive rapid test for influenza were excluded.
