Investigators from New York University Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital in New York City conducted a study to assess the utility of ultrasound (US) as a tool for diagnosing pneumonia in children. Patients ≤21 years old who underwent chest radiography for possible pneumonia in the emergency department (ED) were prospectively enrolled. Study participants underwent clinical examination and chest US performed by study sonologists, who were ED physicians who had received 1 hour of training on performing the test and evaluating the results. Prior to US, study sonologists examined patients and recorded their clinical impression.
