Question: Among infants who have had major surgery, does intermittent IV acetaminophen decrease the need for morphine?

Investigators from Rotterdam, the Netherlands conducted a randomized controlled trial to assess whether intermittent IV acetaminophen decreased morphine requirements in infants <1 year old undergoing thoracic or abdominal surgery. All enrolled patients received standardized anesthetic care and a loading dose of 100 μg/kg of morphine 30 minutes prior to termination of their surgery. Study infants were randomized to 1 of 2 treatment groups for receipt of medication after surgery: intermittent acetaminophen or continuous morphine.
