Question: Among febrile children presenting to the emergency department, can the likelihood of hospitalization be predicted using the Manchester Triage System?
Question type: Diagnosis
Study design: Observational
Researchers from Erasmus University Medical Center in the Netherlands sought to determine whether flowcharts (based on a patient’s presenting problem) and discriminators (that include other signs and symptoms) contained within the Manchester Triage System (MTS)1 could be used in the emergency department (ED) as indicators of serious febrile illness and predict the risk of hospitalization. MTS is designed to prioritize patients according to acuity at triage, but the investigators hypothesized that it could also be used to stratify febrile children for likelihood of hospitalization.
