Investigators from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Massachusetts sought to understand the epidemiology and risk factors for complications requiring removal of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) in hospitalized children. Patients who were admitted to the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center (except those admitted to the neonatal ICU) from 2003 to 2009 and had a PICC inserted were included. Patient demographics, indication for catheter insertion, and other catheter characteristics were collected prospectively by the institution’s PICC team.
