Investigators from the Netherlands assessed the neurodevelopmental outcome of 8-year-old children who had received extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support as newborns in 2 designated ECMO centers in the Netherlands between January 1996 and December 2001. Study assessments included standardized tests for intelligence, concentration, and eye-hand coordination, and parental questionnaires regarding socioeconomic status and the child’s education and behavior. Teachers completed a questionnaire assessing the child’s behavior and enrolled children underwent a structured psychological assessment performed under the supervision of a developmental psychologist. The results were compared to normative data on Dutch children.
