Researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Oklahoma reviewed the medical records of children admitted with skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) after initial emergency department (ED) evaluation between January 2007 and December 2009 to determine the frequency of positive blood cultures. Study patients were identified by using ICD-9-CM codes for cellulitis and abscess.
Cases were separated into complicated infections (cSSTIs) or uncomplicated SSTIs (uSSTIs). cSSTIs included children with surgical or traumatic wounds, need for surgical interventions (beyond routine incision and drainage), and infected ulcers or burns.
