Investigators from the University of Washington conducted a population-based case-control study to evaluate the association between bottle feeding and the development of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS). Cases were singleton infants, <6 months old, born between 2003 and 2009 in Washington State who had been admitted after their birth hospitalization with both a diagnostic code of HPS and a procedure code for pyloromyotomy. Controls were randomly chosen singleton infants who were not admitted with diagnostic and procedure codes for HPS during the study period, and were matched to cases by birth year using a 10:1 ratio.
