Question: Among infants hospitalized in the NICU, how do abdominal ultrasound and radiographic findings compare?

Investigators from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto sought to determine how findings on abdominal radiographs (AXR) and ultrasound (US) compare in infants admitted to the NICU. They enrolled infants consecutively over a 10-month period. The first AXR obtained for clinical reasons among enrolled infants was used for the study. All AXRs included a supine view and some also included a left lateral decubitus view. They subsequently obtained abdominal/pelvic US imaging of each enrolled infant within 4 hours of the AXR if it had not been obtained for clinical reasons. The US was performed using standardized techniques, with the abdomen and pelvis evaluated in all 4 quadrants.
