Question: Among youth <20 years old in the United States, what is the frequency of firearm-related hospitalizations and what are the causes of these injuries?

Investigators from Yale and Boston University sought to quantify the public health burden of hospitalizations related to firearm injuries in the United States using data from the 2009 Kid’s Inpatient Database (KID). KID includes discharge data from acute hospitalizations for children and adolescents under 21 years of age. Eligible cases for the study included hospitalized youth under the age of 20 with 1 of the 4 external causes of injury codes specific to firearms. Data were also collected on patient demographics, type of injury, and estimated cost of hospitalization.
