Question: Among children being treated for leukemia, does the needle size used for lumbar puncture (LP) affect the frequency of post-LP headache?

Study design: Randomized crossover trial
Investigators from the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, compared the frequency of headache and procedure time for lumbar punctures (LP) when performed with either a 25-gauge or 22-gauge needle. Children with leukemia aged 4 to 15 years who would require at least 4 LPs as part of their treatment plan were enrolled in the study and allocated to a random sequence for LPs, 2 with a 22-gauge needle and 2 with a 25-gauge needle.
