Question: Among US children, what is the epidemiology of Clostridium difficile infection and how does it vary across age groups?

Investigators from the Emerging Infections Program (EIP) conducted Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) surveillance in 10 US geographic areas during 2010 to 2011 to understand the epidemiology and clinical presentations of the infection.
Researchers used active population- and laboratory-based CDI surveillance to identify cases. A case was defined as a patient aged 1 to 17 years who had a C difficile-positive stool, by toxin or molecular assay, without a positive test in the prior 8 weeks.
