Question: Among children identified at birth as having high-risk HLA haplotypes, what is the incidence of celiac disease autoimmunity and celiac disease?

Study design: Prospective cohort
Investigators from multiple institutions sought to identify risk factors for the development of celiac disease autoimmunity (CDA) and celiac disease (CD). Participants included in this study had been enrolled as newborns into the Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) study, a prospective cohort study conducted in 4 countries (US, Germany, Sweden, and Finland) that follows children at high genetic risk for type 1 diabetes. TEDDY participants included in the current study had one of 2 HLA haplotypes known to be present in most patients with celiac disease (DR3-DQ2 or DR4-DQ8).
