To determine the association between maternal diabetes mellitus (DM) and neonatal hepatic steatosis, investigators from Washington University in St. Louis and Seattle Children’s Hospital performed a retrospective cohort study of autopsied stillborn infants. The case group was stillborn infants with a history of maternal DM type 1 or type 2, and gestational DM. The control group consisted of stillborn infants delivered to women who had no history of DM matched for gestational age and degree of maceration.
