Question: Among children diagnosed with cancer what is the rate of long-term survival and, among those surviving >5 years, what is the long-term morbidity?

Study design: Retrospective cohort
Investigators from multiple institutions determined the prevalence of childhood cancer survivors and the burden of morbidity among survivors. To estimate prevalence, the investigators used Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) data that include 1975–2011 cancer incidence and survival among individuals ≤19 years old from 5 US states and 4 metropolitan areas. US Census data were used to obtain population-level prevalence estimates. The investigators subsequently examined prevalence by gender, years since cancer diagnosis, and cancer type.
