Question: Among extremely premature newborns, how have maternal and neonatal care practices, neonatal morbidity, and neonatal mortality changed between 1993 and 2012?

Investigators from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network (NRN) analyzed trends in the care and outcomes of extremely premature infants. Infants born at NRN-participating hospitals between 1993 and 2012 who were born at 22–28 weeks’ gestational age with a birth weight of 401–1,500 g were included. Maternal data were collected prospectively soon after birth and infant data were collected until death, hospital discharge, or 120 days of age.
