Investigators from multiple institutions in Canada sought to determine if different characteristics of gut microbiota in early infancy were associated with an increased risk of developing asthma. Participants were enrolled in the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) Study. The CHILD study is a prospective, multicenter general population birth cohort designed to assess development of asthma and atopic disease in which questionnaires, physical examination, and skin testing were used to classify clinical phenotypes at 1 year of age.
