Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a case-control study to determine the association between infection and arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) in children, and tested the hypothesis that vaccinations are protective. Inclusion criteria for cases included an age of 29 days to 18 years at the time of AIS, cerebrovascular imaging, and enrollment within 3 weeks of the AIS. All cases were prospectively enrolled, confirmed by 2 study investigators using pre-established criteria for AIS, and classified by type (arteriopathy, possible artieriopathy, or idiopathic).
