Investigators from multiple institutions determined the epidemiologic characteristics of playground-related injuries from 1990–2012 in US children. Data were obtained from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), which includes injury data from approximately 100 US hospital EDs and represents a stratified probability sample of all US hospitals. Playground-related injuries among children <18 years old (categorized as 0–4, 5–12, and 13–17 years old) were identified in the database using NEISS codes for injuries on slides, seesaws, climbing equipment, swings, or other playground equipment.
