Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a nested case-control study to determine the association of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) with bone fracture in children with asthma. Children aged 2–18 years were eligible to participate if they were (1) living in Ontario, (2) had a physician diagnosis of asthma between 2003–2014, and (3) filled a least one prescription through a publicly funded Ontario drug plan. Children with asthma were identified using the Ontario Asthma Surveillance Information System, which provides the date of asthma diagnosis and defines asthma as at least one hospitalization for asthma ever or ≥2 outpatient visits for asthma in 2 consecutive years.
