Investigators from multiple institutions in The Netherlands conducted a prospective observational cohort study between 2008 and 2012 to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of Enterovirus (EV) and human Parechovirus (HPeV) infections in young infants with sepsis-like illness. Infants were eligible if they were <90 days of age and presented to the ED at a children’s hospital in The Netherlands with sepsis-like symptoms. Infants were included if they received a diagnosis of sepsis-like illness based on validated age-specific criteria applied by the treating physician.
All participants had clinical and demographic data collected on admission. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were obtained and analyzed by means of viral polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and bacterial culture. …
