Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a prospective cohort study to assess long-term outcomes in children after convulsive status epilepticus (CSE). Surviving participants of a previous study on short-term outcomes after CSE were eligible. Parents were interviewed regarding the presence of seizures or epilepsy in their child since CSE onset, cognitive and motor development, behavioral problems, and schooling. Interviews were supplemented with chart review as well as neurological and neurocognitive assessments (eg, Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence [WASI]). The data were merged with previously collected demographic, medical, and developmental data as well as data about the type of CSE at its onset (such as prolonged febrile seizure, idiopathic CSE, and unclassified).
