Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a retrospective analysis to evaluate the rates and impact of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among pregnant women with HIV infections that were not treated prior to labor and delivery. Data for the current study were originally collected as part of the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) 040 trial. For the HPTN 040 Trial, HIV-infected pregnant women in Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, and the United States who had not received antiretroviral (ARV) drugs until labor and delivery were enrolled. Most enrolled mothers were diagnosed with HIV at the time of delivery.
