Investigators from the University of Arkansas, Little Rock, conducted a retrospective study to assess the underlying causes of pediatric non-postoperative pericardial effusion (PCE) and risks for in-hospital mortality and readmission in children with PCE. For the study, the investigators reviewed data in the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) database. The PHIS database includes detailed information on demographics, diagnoses, and procedures on children admitted to 1 of 44 hospitals across the United States. Children diagnosed with PCE, and admitted between 2004 and 2015, were identified by ICD-9 codes; patients with congenital heart disease were excluded to prevent enrolling children with postoperative PCE in the study.
