Investigators from the University of Alabama at Birmingham conducted a retrospective study to assess diagnoses and outcomes among children with isolated mild to moderate thrombocytopenia. Study participants were patients referred to the University of Alabama at Birmingham pediatric hematology clinic with mild (defined as an initial platelet count of 101–140 × 103/μL) or moderate (platelet count, 51–100 × 103/μL) thrombocytopenia during the period from 2012 through 2017; the last date of follow-up was January 2018. Data abstracted from study patients’ medical records included demographic information, history of excessive bruising or bleeding, platelet counts, time to resolution of thrombocytopenia (if this occurred), diagnoses related to thrombocytopenia, and therapeutic interventions.
