Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a retrospective cohort study to assess the predictors of developmental and seizure outcomes in children with infantile spasm (IS) of unknown cause. Data were obtained from the Epilepsy Phenome/Genome Project (EPGP) database, a database of patients with epilepsy from 26 United States and Canadian clinical centers. EPGP participants were eligible if they had a history of epileptic spasms prior to 12 months of age, had an electroencephalogram with hypsarrhythmia, did not have positive genetic or metabolic test results, did not have severe developmental delay prior to the onset of spasms, and had adequate EPGP medical record data for at least 6 months after spasm onset.
