Investigators from Columbia University and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia conducted a retrospective cohort study to assess the management of afebrile infants who presented to the ED with pustules or vesicles on physical exam. All infants ≤60 days of age who presented to the ED of the study hospital from 2008–2015 represented the study sample. Among this sample, investigators used ICD-9 codes related to fluid-filled lesions to identify those likely to have had pustules or vesicles on physical exam. Among those with positive ICD-9 codes, a language processing system was used to identify words in their chart that were related to pustules or vesicles.
