Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a retrospective observational study of pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS) non-survivors to characterize the cause, mode, and timing of death. All children admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit with PARDS who died were eligible. Children with PARDS were identified prospectively from 2011–2017 at one institution and through retrospective chart review of patients admitted between 2009–2013 at the second institution. PARDS was defined using the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury Consensus Conference criteria.
