Investigators from Harvard conducted a retrospective study comparing rates of ADHD diagnosis and treatment among children born in August to rates in those born in September who lived in states with a September 1 birthday cutoff for kindergarten enrollment at age 5. With this design, children born in August would be the youngest group starting kindergarten in a given school year, and those born in September would be the oldest. Data were abstracted from the Truven Health MarketScan Research Database that includes health insurance claims data for 80 million enrollees from all states in the United States covered by approximately 100 non-Medicaid insurance payers.
