Investigators from the CDC conducted a retrospective analysis to assess the incidence of meningococcal disease among college-aged young adults in the United States in 2014 through 2016 and to compare rates of disease among college students and rates of disease among those not attending college (noncollege students). Cases of meningococcal disease among individuals 18–24 years old were identified through review of data in the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System. In 2014 and 2015, enhanced meningococcal disease surveillance was implemented in 45 US states providing additional demographic, clinical, and meningococcal vaccination information. These data were used to classify individuals as college students or noncollege students.
