Investigators from Timone Children’s Hospital in Marseilles, France, conducted a retrospective cohort study to determine predictors of successful surgical management of choanal atresia (CA). Patients were eligible if they had undergone surgery for CA at the study hospital between 1986 and 2016. Investigators abstracted patient demographic and clinical characteristics from their medical charts, including type of CA (bony, membranous, or mixed), whether CA was unilateral CA (UCA) or bilateral CA (BCA), and presence of associated abnormalities. Information about surgical management was also abstracted, including initial surgical approach (transpalatal or endoscopic transnasal), surgical results (with a successful result defined as a choanal arch with <50% restenosis and allowing normal airflow), and number of surgical procedures to obtain adequate choanal arches.
