Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a cluster randomized controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of a digital video in increasing uptake of HPV vaccine in adolescents 11–17 years old. The study was conducted in 5 urban pediatric practices in Indianapolis, IN. Two of the practices were randomly selected as intervention sites, and 3 were control sites. At all study practices, the Indiana state immunization registry was automatically queried when an adolescent was checked in for a clinic visit, and the patient’s immunization history and alerts for immunizations due were downloaded using an operational clinical decision support system. At intervention sites, a medical assistant (MA) was alerted when an adolescent being seen was eligible for an HPV vaccination, and the MA provided a tablet to the parent and launched a video providing the benefits and risks of HPV …
