Investigators at multiple institutions conducted a case series to identify defining features of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) and revise the current CDC AFM case definition. Patients were eligible if they (a) met the CDC case definition for confirmed or probable AFM (defined as acute onset of focal limb weakness and MRI showing a spinal cord lesion largely restricted to gray matter and spanning ≥1 spinal segments, or acute onset of focal limb weakness and cerebrospinal fluid with pleocytosis); (b) received the diagnosis on or after January 1, 2012; and (c) were part of a Johns Hopkins study on AFM or presented to the Johns Hopkins Transverse Myelitis Center for consultation for suspected AFM.
