Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a prospective cohort study to assess the association of e-cigarette use with subsequent cigarette initiation. Data were obtained from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, which used a stratified probability sample design to collect information on tobacco use among US youth in 3 waves from 2013–2016. PATH participants aged 12–15 years old who reported never using any tobacco product in the wave 1 questionnaire were eligible. Demographics and risk-taking behavior variables (eg, ever use of alcohol) were also collected during wave 1, with youths who exhibited no risk-taking behaviors categorized as low (vs intermediate or high) risk.
