Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a longitudinal prospective study to assess the association between gluten intake and development of celiac disease autoimmunity and celiac disease among children at increased genetic risk for the disease. Study data were collected as part of The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) project. For TEDDY, newborns born between 2004 and 2010 in Finland, Germany, Sweden, and the United States were screened for specific HLA-DR-DQ genotypes that conferred increased risk for type 1 diabetes and/or celiac disease.
