Investigators from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, conducted a prospective cohort study in infants with congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) to determine risk factors for developing sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Infants with cCMV were identified through routine screening of consecutive live-born infants born between 1995 and 2017 at the study hospital who had cCMV diagnosed using saliva and urine culture within 5 days of birth. All infants with cCMV during the study period were eligible for inclusion in the study.
The primary outcome was SNHL, defined as hearing loss at >20 dB. Infants with cCMV were tested for SNHL until the age of 4 years. SNHL was categorized as late onset if it was not present at birth but developed by age 4 years.
