Investigators at several institutions conducted a case-control study to assess rotavirus vaccine effectiveness in reducing rotavirus-associated inpatient and ED visits. Children were eligible if they were <5 years old and were hospitalized or seen in the ED at 1 of 7 New Vaccine Surveillance Network study sites for acute gastroenteritis (AGE). AGE was defined as ≥3 diarrheal episodes within 24 hours and/or ≥1 vomiting episode within 24 hours. Severity of AGE was assessed using a standardized scoring system at enrollment and was categorized as mild, moderate, and severe.
