Investigators from Amsterdam University Medical Centers, Amsterdam, and Imagelabonline and Cardiovascular, Erichem, both in the Netherlands, conducted a study assessing long-term outcomes in children treated with statins for familial hypercholesterolemia with elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Study participants were children with familial hypercholesterolemia (98% genetically confirmed) and their unaffected siblings who had originally participated in a randomized controlled trial on the efficacy and safety of pravastatin, with enrollment between 1997 and 1999. These individuals were recontacted and asked to complete a questionnaire detailing subsequent medical history, lifestyle habits, medication use, and family history.
