Investigators from multiple Scandinavian institutions conducted a prospective cohort study to assess the prevalence of and risk factors for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis among those with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Patients were recruited from the Nordic JIA cohort, a group of consecutively enrolled children with JIA diagnosed by pediatric rheumatologists in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden from 1997 to 2000. Patients were contacted 17 years later and invited to participate in a follow-up visit. A control group of age-matched individuals also was recruited for comparison.
At the follow-up visit, participants with JIA and control participants completed a questionnaire regarding treatment course and orofacial symptoms within the past 2 weeks, such as the presence of ≥1 TMJ-related symptoms (eg, TMJ stiffness, TMJ pain, …
