Investigators at the University of Colorado conducted a prospective cohort study to assess the feasibility and accuracy of fast MRI in identifying radiographically apparent traumatic brain injury (TBI). Fast MRI uses abbreviated, motion-tolerant sequences to complete neuroimaging without sedation and has been used to eliminate radiation exposure in other contexts. Children were eligible if they were seen in the study ED, were <6 years old, and underwent head CT during their ED visit. Fast MRI was attempted within 24 hours of the CT, although it was aborted at the request of the patient’s family or care provider, or if it could not be completed within 30 minutes.
