Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a retrospective study to assess the risk of subsequent malignant neoplasms (SMNs) in survivors of childhood cancer. For the study, the authors reviewed data from the North American Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS) cohort. The CCSS cohort includes data on 5-year survivors of childhood cancer with a diagnosis made between 1970 and 1999 at 1 of 28 centers. Data on the initial type of cancer and treatment were collected; study participants were classified as receiving chemotherapy only, chemotherapy plus radiation, radiation only, or neither chemotherapy nor radiation. Chemotherapy was categorized by type (eg, alkylating agents, platinum-based agents) and dose. Study participants completed baseline and follow-up questionnaires. Any SMN identified in a follow-up questionnaire was verified by review of medical records or death certificates. …
